In the Walking Dead comic series the genre is science fiction. Science fiction likes to exaggerate things that are happening in the real world. Shane did that very well in the first volume. He went crazy when Rick came back. Just like some people snap when things happen unplanned.
Shane was planning to kill Rick because Shane was in love with Lori Rick's wife. This was when Shane snapped. Like many people do right now. They yell and get angry but Shane was going to shoot his best friend Rick.
In conclusion the real world and the fictional world of zombies are quite alike. People snap and break while some stay strong. This is what happens now and it is the social commentary of this story.
